A ?carcineretid crab from Lower Turonian (Cretaceous) black shales of Misburg, Hannover area (Germany) Naturalis
Neumann, Christian; Jagt, John W.M..
Although poorly preserved and missing most, if not all, carapace features that would allow for a proper assignment at the generic level, we think a crab (Fig. 1) contained in the collections of the late Professor Gundolf Ernst warrants a short description, if only in view of its preservational style.

A case of homonymy in fossil verrucid barnacles: Verruca withersi (Crustacea, Thoracica) Naturalis
Jagt, J.W.M.; Buckeridge, J.S..
For fossil verrucid barnacles, the name Verruca withersi appears to have been used twice; Schram & Newman described material from the Albian-Cenomanian (Cretaceous) of Colombia, while Kruizinga had previously recorded a new species from the Pleistocene(?) or perhaps younger strata of Sumba (Indonesia). We do not consider V. withersi Schram & Newman to be a cirripede, therefore no replacement name is needed for this junior synonym. Verruca withersi Kruizinga is a valid species related to the extant V. cookei.

A extração de corrupto, Callichirus major (Say) (Crustacea, Thalassinidea), para uso como isca em praias do litoral do Paraná: as populações exploradas Zoologia
Souza,José R. B.; Borzone,Carlos A..
A recreational fishery that use ghost-shrimp as bait was evaluated along 11 km of a sandy beach of Paraná State. The beach was divided in five sectors and samples were obtained along a transect extended on the middle of each sector, after and before months of major extractive activity. The highest densities were found in beaches with well select very fine sands and gentle slope. The density decreased only at the sector that presented greater extractive activity. In this sector, the smallest mean modal size was detected too. The total standing stock of the whole area was 2,486,250 individuals before summer's months, with a mean density of de 4.48 ind.m-2. Annual fishing effort represented nearly 10 % of total standing stock.

A monographic review of the Thermosbaenacea (Crustacea: Peracarida) A study on their morphology, taxonomy, phylogeny and biogeography Naturalis
Wagner, H.P..
In addition to a taxonomic review of the whole order Thermosbaenacea, the general morphology and chaetotaxy are discussed in detail. Due to the results of cuticular staining, and through the study of specimens with SEM techniques also, corrections to earlier interpretations could be made. A chaetotaxic classification, modified after the one of Watling (1989), is presented. In the taxonomic part 34 species are recognized, belonging to seven genera (one new), four families (one new). The examination of adult material of the type species of Monodella, i.e., Monodella stygicola Ruffo, 1949, warranted the creation of Tethysbaena gen. nov., to comprise all other taxa previously included in Monodella. Transferred to Tethysbaena are: M. argentarii Stella, 1951; M....

A new classification of the Xanthoidea sensu lato (Crustacea: Decapoda: Brachyura) based on phylogenetic analysis and traditional systematics and evaluation of all fossil Xanthoidea sensu lato Naturalis
Karasawa, H.; Schweitzer, C.E..
A phylogenetic analysis was conducted including representatives from all recognized extant and extinct families of the Xanthoidea sensu lato, resulting in one new family, Hypothalassiidae. Four xanthoid families are elevated to superfamily status, resulting in Carpilioidea, Pilumnoidoidea, Eriphioidea, Progeryonoidea, and Goneplacoidea, and numerous subfamilies are elevated to family status. The Mathildellidae is moved from the Goneplacidae to the Portunoidea. Diagnoses for all superfamilies and families discussed herein are provided, embracing characters typically used by biologists as well as readily fossilized features of the dorsal carapace, sternum, abdomen, and chelipeds. All genera known from the fossil record at one time referred to the Xanthidae...

A new preparatory approach of decapod and thoracican crustaceans from the Middle Danian at Fakse, Denmark Naturalis
Jakobsen, Sten Lennart.
Many papers on the taxonomy of fossil crustaceans are often based upon poorly preserved material and/or specimens that have been insufficiently prepared. The purpose of the present note is to outline some preparation methods that are applied in our (J.S.H. Collins and S.L.J.) ongoing studies of anomuran and brachyuran decapods from the Middle Danian limestones at Fakse quarry (Denmark), which have greatly enhanced the quality of our material. The techniques briefly outlined here involve: 1 – staining method; 2 – water blasting (as a cleaning tool in preparation of fossils); and 3 – negative preparation (with acid). Some of these techniques will have wide applications in other fields of paleontological research.

A new species of Cymbasoma (Copepoda: Monstrilloida) from the Sulu Sea, Philippines Naturalis
Suárez-Morales, E..
A specimen of a monstrilloid copepod collected by the U.S. Fisheries Steamer “Albatross“ in the Sulu Sea, west coast of Mindanao, Philippines, and deposited in the U.S. National Museum of Natural History, was taxonomically restudied. The specimen had been originally identified as a male of Monstrilla serricornis Sars by C.B. Wilson. Reexamination revealed that the specimen represents a new species of the genus Cymbasoma, C. mcalicei. This species can be distinguished by its body proportions and body size, but mainly by the structure of the genital lappets, which have a serrated posterior margin unique in the genus. This is the seventh species of Cymbasoma reported from East or Southeast Asia.

A new species of Pseudoniphargus (Crustacea, Amphipoda) from subterranean water of northeastern Morocco: Historical biogeography and evolutionary aspects Naturalis
Abiari, A. Fakher el; Oulbaz, Z.; Messouli, M.; Coineau, N..
A new species of Pseudoniphargus, P. longiflagellum (Crustacea, Amphipoda) is described from subterranean fresh water of the Riftan region of Morocco. This species is closely related to the group P. ruffoi-P. longipes, which shares several apomorphic characters. The two-step model of colonization and evolution provides an understanding of the origin and the age of this stygobiont. P. longiflagellum is derived from marine ancestors that lived in the coastal groundwater of the Tethyan South-Rifian channel during the Miocene Tortonian period. The regression of this corridor during the late Tortonian period or at the beginning of the Messinian period may have played a major role in the evolutionary history through vicariance.

A new spelaeogriphacean (Crustacea: Peracarida) from the Upper Jurassic of China Naturalis
Yan-bin, Shen; Taylor, Rod S.; Schram, Frederick R..
A new monotypic genus of Spelaeogriphacea is described from the Upper Jurassic of Liaoning Province, north-east China. This new genus and species brings the number of known spelaeogriphacean taxa to four, the others being two recent forms from Brazil and South Africa, and one from the Carboniferous of eastern Canada. The new Chinese form is morphologically (and phylogenetically) very similar to the recent spelaeogriphaceans, suggesting that the body plan seen in the recent Spelaeogriphacea was achieved relatively early in the history of the group. A cladistic analysis of this and several other peracaridan orders indicates that the Spelaeogriphacea may be a paraphyletic group. This suggests that much work remains to be done with respect to the taxonomy and...

A note on the systematic position of the Bathynellacea (Crustacea, Malacostraca) using molecular evidence Naturalis
Camacho, Ana Isabel; Rey, Isabel; Dorda, Beatriz A.; Machordom, Annie; Valdecasas, Antonio G..
Molecular data for the mt 16S rDNA gene fragment of a bathynellacean is here presented for the first time and used to analyze the relationship of the group within the crustacean class Malacostraca (Arthropoda, Bathynellacea). Two contrasting views have classified the bathynelids as being cither within the order Syncarida or in a separate super-order Podophallocarida belonging to the infra-class Eonomostraca, a disagreement based mainly on debates over external and internal morphology. The preliminary analyses offered here in question the placement of this Bathynellacea within the Syncarida, and suggest the need for a further study of relationships among the malacostracan groups.
